Rio de Janeiro: Santos forward Neymar has been diagnosed with a new leg muscle injury, as confirmed by the club on Friday, adding to his ongoing battle to achieve full fitness.

During Santos' 2-0 win against Atletico Mineiro on Wednesday, Neymar had to leave the field in the 34th minute. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed damage to the semimembranosus, one of the hamstring muscles, according to reports.

Santos coach Cesar Sampaio commented, "It’s still too early to provide a definitive answer; we don’t have a complete diagnosis yet. We must hope it’s not a long-term issue."

The club's official statement clarified that this injury is not a recurrence of a previous issue.

"The number 10 has already begun treatment and will continue with muscle strengthening exercises," Santos added, though they did not specify a recovery timeline.

Since returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament last October, Neymar has faced multiple soft-tissue injuries.

He briefly regained form and was called up for the national team during World Cup qualifiers in March but had to withdraw due to another muscle injury. Neymar has not represented Brazil since October 2023 due to a knee issue, with teenage Real Madrid forward Endrick taking his place.

Santos stated, "He will be periodically reevaluated for monitoring and adjustments to his treatment plan. These complications were anticipated due to his extended inactivity."

Since rejoining Santos from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, Neymar has played eight matches and netted three goals.
